Adults often suffer bone loss with steroid drug use whereas children seem to be protected from bone loss by the obesity that occurs with steroid drug use. In fact, the weight increase associated with the use of steroid drugs may in fact stimulate the body to build more bone thus giving them stronger bones than healthy children. However, steroid drugs used to treat inflammatory bowel disease and juvenile rheumatoid arthritis oven does lead to loss of bone mass which is probably due more to the disease than the steroid use.
