Medical News Summary (summary of medical news story as reported by ABC News Online): A study conducted in Sweden and published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that gastric surgery where the large intestine was bypassed was a more effective weight loss method than dieting. Those who underwent surgery had a 23% weight loss after 2 years and 16% after 10 years whereas those who simply dieted had no weight loss over the same amount of time. Those who underwent surgery also became more active and developed fewer weight related conditions such as diabetes. The study is continuing in order to determine whether the weight loss associated with the surgery leads to longer lives.
