Medical News Summary (summary of medical news story as reported by Mayo Clinic): 1 in 70 women will develop ovarian cancer. It is difficult to diagnose because the tumour forms internally and is difficult to detect. If the cancer is detected in the early stages, the survival is around 90%. However, many cases are detected in the late stages. It was previously thought that there were no real symptoms associated with the cancer but a study has shown that there are some consistent symptoms. These include urinary incontinence, urgency or frequency, abdominal pain and an expanded waist in the later stages. These symptoms are also common to many other conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome and colon cancer. However, if these symptoms occur and do not resolve in a matter of weeks than ovarian cancer should be tested for. Ovarian cancer is very aggressive and grows rapidly thus diagnosis needs to be expedient.
