Medical News Summary (summary of medical news story as reported by WIS TV): Endovenus ablation is a non-traumatic procedure to treat varicose veins. Varicose veins are often evidence of reflux in the saphenous vein which is a major vein in the middle of the leg. During reflux, the blood flows the wrong way. Endovenus ablation involves administering local anesthesia after which a thin laser fiber is inserted into the problematic vein. The laser is heated causing the vein to close off. Patients are encouraged to get mobile straight away but to avoid aerobic exercise and wear a pressure stocking for a week. Any persistent varicose veins are injected or removed at a later date.
