Public debate rages over the use of drugs to treat childhood psychiatric illnesses. 15,000 two year olds were treated with antidepressants in 1995 in the US. Symptoms of depression in young children can include excessive aggressiveness, frequent stomachaches and headaches, joyless play and a depressed or sad demeanor. Parents need to be aware that it is possible for young children to have psychiatric illnesses.
