Medical News Summary (summary of medical news story as reported by e Diets): Many people are aware of the benefits Vitamin D delivers with respect to bone health and prevention of osteoporosis. However, Vitamin D also offers benefits in about 10 other health conditions so far – eg diabetes, insulin resistance. Low levels of Vitamin D prevent the normal functioning of insulin-producing cells as well as increasing the risk of insulin resistance. This causes the body to overcompensate by producing extra insulin. Insulin-producing cells eventually lose their insulin making ability and blood glucose rises. Sources of Vitamin D include sunlight, egg yolks, liver, cold liver oil and fortified milk. A health person requires 200-600 IU of Vitamin D each day but people with certain chronic illnesses such as diabetes, have dark skin or frequently wear sunscreen may require more.
