Medical News Summary (summary of medical news story as reported by CBS News): Women can start to lose bone density as early as in their 20’s. Osteopenia is the pre-curser to osteoporosis and many women are unaware that they of it. A rheumatologist estimates that 20% of young women and 50% of women over 45 have osteopenia. The risk factors for osteopenia are: history of bone thinning in female members of family, weight is under 127 pounds, inactivity, smoking and approaching menopause. Anyone who has the risk factors should be tested for bone thinning and medication may be recommended. Medication in sufferers of bone thinning may decrease fractures by up to 75%.
