Introduction: Perinatal conditions
Perinatal conditions:
Perinatal refers to conditions that occur in the time surrounding childbirth
and that affect the newborn baby (i.e. not the mother's conditions or her complications of childbirth).
In some cases, the term refers to those conditions in the newborn occurring shortly after birth.
Sometimes, the perinatal period extends to the full period of the neonatal period (i.e. first 28 days of life).
In some cases, "perinatal" also includes conditions of the fetus occurring shortly prior to birth.
