Rotavirus is a common cause of hospitalizations (50,000 annually)
and emergency room and outpatient clinic visits (500,000 annually) in
this country. An estimated 20 children die from rotavirus
gastroenteritis annually. Most hospitalizations and outpatient visits
for severe rotavirus diarrhea and dehydration occur among children 3 to
35 months of age.
