Prevalence and Incidence of Trachoma

About prevalence and incidence statistics: The term 'prevalence' of Trachoma usually refers to the estimated population of people who are managing Trachoma at any given time. The term 'incidence' of Trachoma refers to the annual diagnosis rate, or the number of new cases of Trachoma diagnosed each year. Hence, these two statistics types can differ: a short-lived disease like flu can have high annual incidence but low prevalence, but a life-long disease like diabetes has a low annual incidence but high prevalence. Worldwide prevalence of Trachoma:WHO estimates that approximately 6 million cases of blindness due to trachoma and 11 million cases of trichiasis occur yearly. Prevalence of active disease in children varies from 10-40% in some African countries to 3-10% in several Asian countries. The overall incidence is unknown. ¹

Prevelance of Trachoma discussion: Blindness due to trachoma has been eliminated from the United States. The last cases were found among American Indian populations and in Appalachia. ¹
