Risk Factors for Uterine fibroids
| About risk factors: Risk factors for Uterine fibroids are factors that do not seem to be a direct cause of the disease, but seem to be associated in some way. Having a risk factor for Uterine fibroids makes the chances of getting a condition higher but does not always lead to Uterine fibroids. Also, the absence of any risk factors or having a protective factor does not necessarily guard you against getting Uterine fibroids. For general information and a list of risk factors, see the risk center. |
Risk factor list: The list of risk factors mentioned for Uterine fibroids in various sources includes:
- Females
- Reproductive age
- Contraceptive pills
Protective factors: Certain factors have been mentioned as lowering the risk of Uterine fibroids including:
- Children - having children seems to be protective against fibroids.
- Multiple pregnancies
Risk factors discussion:
No risk factors have been found for uterine fibroids other than being a
female of reproductive age. However, some factors have been described that
seem to be protective. In some studies (again, with small numbers of
women) investigators found that as a group, women who have had two
liveborn children have one-half the risk of having uterine fibroids
compared to women who have had no liveborn children. It is not yet known
whether having children actually protects a woman from developing fibroids
or whether fibroids contributed to the infertility of women who had no
children.1
